  3. Pledge:
  4. I promise to love the animals.  I'll treat them kindly, like my pals.  
  5. I'll offer them water or a gentle word.  I'm glad I'm a kid who loves 
  6. the animals.

  9. Look!  Look!  Animals!  Fat ones, furry ones, wild ones, tame ones.  
  10. I'm glad animals live on Earth.  Animals and people belong together.  
  11. I love animals.

  13. What's your favorite animal?  Mold it in clay.  You can use dough 
  14. from the store, or you can ask an adult to help you make this recipe.

  16. Critter Clay:
  17. 2 cups (.5 liters) water
  18. 2 cups (.5 liters) flour
  19. 1 cup (.25 liters) salt
  20. 1/2 cup (.125 liters) cornstarch
  21. 2 tablespoons oil (30 ml)
  22. 1 tablespoon (15 ml) powdered alum or 1 teaspoon (5 ml) cream of 
  23. tartar
  24. few drops of food coloring

  26. Add the food coloring to the water.  Mix all ingredients in a saucepan.  
  27. Cook over medium heat until thick.  Remove from heat.  When the 
  28. mixture is cool enough to handle, knead it until it is smooth.  This 
  29. recipe make 3 cups (.75 liters) of dough.  It should not be eaten!  The 
  30. dough will keep in the refrigerator for months.

  33. I love animals.  Higgins is my best friend.  I tell him all of my secrets.  
  34. We don't speak the same language, but we understand each other.  I

  37. Take a minute to show your pet that you care.  A scratch behind the 
  38. ears or a friendly word will make your pet's day!

  41. I love animals.  I wish I had a fat, brown horse who lived in my 
  42. backyard.  I'd brush her, feed her, and give her clean water to drink.  
  43. I'd even let her nibble carrots from my hand.  I love animals.

  45. If you don't have a horse in your backyard, you can keep a pretend 
  46. horse.  Throw the saddle on anytime and go for a gallop.  Don't forget 
  47. the sugar cubes!

  50. I love animals.  It's time for a game of pretend with my friends.. I 
  51. want to be the monkey because they hop and scratch.  Cal is the deer 
  52. because they run fast-fast-fast.  And Helen pretends she's a hyena 
  53. because they laugh and laugh.  I love animals.

  55. Make an animal mask.  You will need a paper plate, paper punch, 
  56. scissors, yarn, and markers or crayons.  First, use the scissors to cut 
  57. holes in the plate for your eyes and nose.  Punch small holes on each 
  58. side. Thread the holes with a piece of yarn.  (Make a large knot on 
  59. the end of the yarn so it doesn't pull through.)  Decorate the mask 
  60. with markers or crayons.  What will you make?  A lion?  A bat?  A 
  61. cow?  A walrus?

  64. I love animals, so I went on a friendly safari.  I took a picture of a 
  65. rabbit chewing lettuce... a cat sleeping on the sidewalk... and my little 
  66. sister wearing a toy elephant trunk.  She didn't count as an animal at 
  67. all!  I love animals.

  69. Go on a library safari to find books about animals you've never heard 
  70. of.  Did you discover any new creatures?  What's an ocelot?  A newt?  
  71. An orangutan?

  74. I love animals, so my friends and I did an animal dance.  We 
  75. stamped our hooves.  We wagged our tails.  We wiggled our ears, and 
  76. shook our fur.  We had so much fun, we never wanted to stop.  I love 
  77. animals.

  79. You can have an animal dance, too.  Invite your friends.  Choose the 
  80. animals you will pretend to be.  Will you dance like a gerbil?  Or 
  81. would you rather be a chicken?  Start the music, and dance, you 
  82. party animal, you!

  85. I love animals.  These kittens are brand new -- homemade by my 
  86. grown-up cat, Mrs. Mittens.  They're soft and tiny.  Their eyes are 
  87. closed tight.  I can look all I want -- but I'd better not touch!  I love 
  88. animals.

  90. Animal shelters take care of animals that don't have homes.  Some 
  91. shelters have visiting hours.  Ask your parents to take you so you 
  92. can play with the dogs and cats.  The animals will have fun, and so 
  93. will you.

  96. I love animals.  We used potted plants to turn my friend Jasper's 
  97. room into a make-believe jungle.  Everyone brought their stuffed 
  98. toys and a snack.  "Mmmm," said Barney, "pass the bananas."  Sid 
  99. said, "May I have a little more coconut ice cream, please?"  What a 
  100. wild jungle time.  I love animals.

  102. Make animal sounds with your friends.  Record them on a cassette 
  103. recorder.  Can your family guess what kind of animals you are?

  106. I love animals -- even Roscoe, our class rat.  He needs fresh food and 
  107. water every day.  I always give him an extra scratch on the back.  
  108. Roscoe and I are good buddies.  I love animals.

  111. Earth's animal friends.  People need animals, and animals need 
  112. people! We help each other.
